IGF-I, IgA, and IgG responses to bovine colostrum supplementation during training.
2002
This study examined the effect of bovine colostrum (Dynamic colostrum) supplementation on blood and saliva variables ( study 1) and the absorption of orally administered human recombinant insulin-like growth factor (IGF)-I (rhIGF-I) labeled with 123I (123I-rhIGF-I) ( study 2). In study 1, adult male and female athletes were randomly assigned in a double-blind fashion to either an experimental (Dynamic; n = 19) or a control (Placebo; n = 11) group. The former consumed daily 20 g of Dynamic supplement, and the latter 20 g of maltodextrin during a 2-wk training period. After bovine colostrum supplementation, significant increases were noticed in serum IGF-I ( P < 0.01) and saliva IgA ( P &…
Polybrominated diphenyl ethers in foods from the Region of Valencia: Dietary exposure and risk assessment
2019
Abstract Dietary exposure to polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) of the population in the Region of Valencia, Spain, was assessed. A group of 320 composite samples of different fatty foods was collected and analyzed, including the following: vegetable oils, and foods of animal origin such as (a) fish and seafood, (b) eggs, (c) milk and dairy products, and (d) meat and meat products. Two scenarios were assumed for left-censored results: lower-bound (LB) and upper-bound (UB). Vegetable oils, and fish and seafood presented the highest content of PBDEs [mean values of 503 and 464 pg g−1 wet weight (ww) for total PBDEs, respectively, in the UB]. The dominating congeners were BDE47 in the food…
Multi-analyte method for the analysis of legacy and alternative brominated and chlorinated flame retardants in food products of animal origin using g…
2019
Abstract An analytical method was developed and validated for the analysis of 32 halogenated flame retardants (HFRs), including 13 polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), 9 dechlorane-related compounds (DRCs) and 10 of the so-called alternative BFRs in food samples of animal origin. Gas chromatography (GC) coupled with magnetic sector high resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) was used for the instrumental analysis. Intralaboratory validation of the developed method was performed in terms of recovery, repeatability, linear calibration ranges, instrumental and method limits of quantitation (i-LOQ and m-LOQ). Where possible, trueness was verified by the analysis of reference materials (RMs). Fo…
Green chromatography for the analysis of foods of animal origin
2016
Abstract The use of green chromatography methods, for the determination of different components and contaminants in foods of animal origin, has been reviewed from a literature update of papers published in the last years, paying special attention to the efforts regarding the reduction and greening of the sample preparatory steps, the use of clean alternative mobile phases, the improvement of stationary phases used in this type of analysis, and the increase of the analytical information obtained from each chromatography run. In general, it can be seen that the efforts to reduce the deleterious side effects of the analytical methods have also been focused on the maintenance, or improvement, o…
Applying the Techniques on Materials I
2012
The knowledge of the composition of the natural dye mixtures gives hints on appropriate procedures for restoration strategies. Identification of the dyes used, the establishment of their biological source, how they have been prepared, how these historical textiles were made, can provide important information. The dyestuffs used up to nineteenth century were either of plant (weld, madder, indigo, etc.) or animal origin (cochineal, shellfish, etc.) and belonged to various chemical types, such as flavonoids (yellow), anthraquinones (red) and indigoids (blue and violet). In this study microsamples (19) were examined from 11 Mevlana’s kaftans, dervishs’ dresses and dated from the thirteenth cent…
Analysis of cannabinoids by liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry in milk, liver and hemp seed to ensure food safety
2017
A method for determining cannabinoids, Δ9-tetrahidrocannabinol (THC), 11-nor-9-carboxy-Δ9-THC (THC-COOH) and 11-hidroxy-Δ9-THC (THC-OH) in milk, liver and hemp seeds based on liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry has been optimized and validated. Analytes were extracted with methanol and the extracts cleaned-up by solid-phase extraction using Oasis HLB (60 mg). The developed method was validated according to the Commission Decision 2002/657/EC. The decision limit (CCα) and detection capability (CCβ) ranged from 3.10–10.5 ng g−1 and 3.52–11.5 ng g−1, the recoveries were 76–118% and matrix effect ranged from −17.8% to 19.9% in the three matrices studied. The method was applied to foo…
Advances in Marine Natural Products of the Indole and Annelated Indole Series: Chemical and Biological Aspects
2001
Marine natural products, form a field of scientific endeavour, that has recently grown considerably. The isolation, biological evaluation, chemical properties and synthetic elaborations of products of marine organisms have attracted the attention of organic chemists, medicinal chemists, biologists and pharmacists. In this context a structurally and biologically highly interesting class is represented by the marine natural products containing an indole moiety in a pure substituted form or in an anellated form. The present review summarizes primarily the actual results concerning these products as new pharmacologically attractive lead compounds for drug design. The chemistry, biological evalu…
APPLICATION OF REAL-TIME POLYMERASE CHAIN REACTION FOR RAPID DETERMINATION OFSALMONELLAIN RESTAURANT FOODS
2008
Several foods have been identified as frequently or occasionally contaminated with Salmonella, such as eggs, raw milk and all raw foods of animal origin that may carry salmonella and other bacteria. Salmonellosis is the most common food-borne illness, but it is usually preventable according to the implementation of a food safety system that includes Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point. In this study, 96 food samples of the University restaurant of Valencia (Spain) were divided into four groups: first course; main course; accompaniment; and dessert, and were analyzed simultaneously with classical and fluorogenic polymerase chain reaction microbiological analysis. Neither of the proced…
Novel bioactive bromopyrrole alkaloids from the Mediterranean sponge Axinella verrucosa
2005
The Mediterranean sponge Axinella verrucosa has been investigated for its alkaloid composition and has been found to produce a complex mixture of bromopyrrole alkaloids. Along with the previously isolated compounds 5-18, four novel alkaloids of this class, compounds 1-4, have been isolated, and their structures established through spectroscopic methods. Compounds 1-4 were found to display neuroprotective activity against the agonists serotonin and glutamate in vitro.
